And suddenly it’s November here. It certainly seems like it, anyway. While I am fairly certain that summer will blurt out a final dying gasp of warm weather for a week or two in September, we’ve gone from 35 and sticky to frost on the ground when I am out for rides in the morning. Today not withstanding (it’s pretty miserable outside, with rain, wind, and cold), this is my favourite time of year. I should have picked up some squash at the market this morning — nothing says fall like a really tasty soup — but perhaps tomorrow. If I do that, I will probably document it for the site.
I’ve been reading what I wrote about why I went vegan earlier, and there are few things I am going to update it with. Instead of just changing the document, I’ll probably annotate it some how to reflect how my ideas and beliefs have changed over time. Some things have been working, and some have not. It’s coming up on the anniversary now (November 14th) and it’d be cool to put fingers to keyboard and mention what I’ve figured out about the whole thing. If anything.
This week has been crazy. Work has been a mad scramble, trying to meet a few deadlines before I take off next week. I am really looking forward to total decompression, that state you get to when just staring at a particular brick in a wall is an accomplishment. I’ve been an asshat at work while all of this has been going on, which is probably not doing me any good.
However, things are actually happening. Good code (I think) is being written, decisions about design are being made that will hopefully result in a solution that is sustainable, extensible, and maintainable. We’ll find out once our repository starts to scale.
On a different note, I was picking up groceries yesterday, and I normally make it a point to either reuse vegetable bags from home, or unpack store cardboard containers and move them to things easier to carry home in my pack. The end result is that this makes me an annoying pain in the ass at the cash, but I leave sort of feeling good about myself. Yesterday, after doing all of this, some knob comes through the checkout behind me with a double bagged ear of corn. He then also asks the person for a regular bag to carry it out in. The cashier gave me a look, we smiled, and that was it.
I am going to try to put up a recipe for punjabi chole in the next few days.
In keeping with my new anti-procrastination mentality, I’ve put up another recipe. Mujaddara is something I make all the time, but never bothered to write it down. It’s tasty, cheap, and dead easy to make.
I have uploaded a Fattouche Salad recipe. I hope you like it.
Back from my running around this morning. It’s a typical Saturday, mostly. This time of year, the Farmer’s Market is incredible. Vegans suffer through winter on root veggies so now is the time to feast. I picked up some really nice red onions with the tops still on them. Not sure what I’m going to do with them just yet but something will come up.
I should have a recipe/photo essay up for a fattoush salad tonight. I keep making them but I’m always hungry when I make them so taking photos while I do it is a secondary action. Some of the folks on Reefcentral have been asking me to put up more of them so this will be the first I do. Honestly, documenting these will force me to eat more of a variety of things. I tend to eat a lot of the same things because I know how they affect my energy levels and that’s a concern — nothing quite like tweaking your meal plan and then having your energy levels crash on a ride the next day.
Well, it’s probably about damn time I get something worthwhile up on this page. Anyway, I am in the middle of putting up a bunch of new recipes, some more photos, and some updated info on a trip to Morocco and the Atlas mountains in a few weeks. I have been doing (and enjoying) my work lately, which is saying something. I am starting, slowly, to see the beauty of Fedora (the software) as a big piece of the puzzle for some projects going on in the Library. It’s nice to be non-meh about work again.
More to come. This is also mainly to test page formatting for the front of the site.
